Animal Care Course

Course Overview

The Introduction to Laboratory Animal Care Course is provided as a web-based training experience and covers:

  • Regulations and Guidelines
  • Standards of Animal Care and Use
  • Occupational Health in an Animal Research Facility
  • Animal Facility Utilization
  • Animal Welfare/Animal Rights Movement


The course is offered in the following formats:

Upon completion of the training, course participants are required to take a quiz and must achieve a passing score of 70 percent. Up to five attempts are allowed in order to achieve a passing score, with the highest score kept as the participant's final grade. Scores may be viewed by clicking on the "Gradebook" icon on the course home page.

Course Access

Faculty, staff and students of Northeast Ohio Medical University can contact Sharon Combs-Eisenbarth by email at scombs@neomed.edu to request access to the Introduction to Laboratory Animal Care Course. You will be notified of course registration via email once your request is processed.

Non-University faculty, staff and students must request a guest account by completing a Request for Guest Account form at https://surveys.neomed.edu/se.ashx?s=705E3EE154877A23. You will be notified via email once your guest account is established. The email will contain your login, password and instructions for accessing the course. Please contact cmu@neomed.edu if you do not receive a login and password notification within five business days of your submitted request.

Facility Tour at Northeast Ohio Medical University

All University facility users must participate in a brief facility orientation (tour) of the Comparative Medicine Unit (CMU). Please contact Linda McCort, CMU Manager, at either X-6557 or at 330.325.6557 or the CMU Office at either X-6555 or at 330.325.6555 to arrange a tour of the CMU.

Kent State University (KSU) Personnel

KSU personnel MUST submit the "Tests and Quizzes" score sheet to the facility manager at the facility in which they will work AND attach a copy of their completed "Protocol Participants" page or "Addition of Personnel" form as well. Click on the "Tests and Quizzes" icon on the course home page. The "Tests and Quizzes" page lists the title of the course, score and the dates/times the quiz was completed. Select "File" and then "Print" to receive a printout of the score sheet.
