Maria R. Schimer, J.D., serves as the general counsel for Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and is the Ohio Assistant Attorney General representing the University. She is also counsel to the NEOMED Board of Trustees. Schimer is a licensed attorney in the state of Ohio and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Schimer has been employed by the University for more than 30 years, and in addition to her legal duties,  serves as the chief technology transfer officer. At NEOMED, she is a member of the Bylaws Committee, REDIzone® Committee, Intellectual Property Committee and Conflict of Interest Committee. She also serves as chair on the Board of Directors at Pathogen Systems Incorporated (d/b/a CDx). Additionally, Schimer is chair of the Board of Directors at ERS Strategic Properties, Inc., and is a member of the Legal Advisory Committee at Austin BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA).

A graduate of The University of Akron, School of Law, she also earned a master’s degree in public health planning and administration, and gerontology from the University of Michigan. She has two bachelor’s degrees in nursing and sociology from the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Schimer’s academic interests include legal issues in the practice of medicine and public health, the legal rights of competent and incompetent persons, guardianship and adult protective services law, elder abuse and neglect, conflict resolution and alternative dispute resolution.

Currently, she also serves as an associate professor of family and community medicine, a member of the NEOMED Master Teachers Guild, a graduate faculty member in the College of Graduate Studies at NEOMED, a Fellow of the Institute for Life Span Development and Gerontology at The University of Akron and an adjunct faculty member in the Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master of Public Health Program.
