The Liebelt/Wheeler Award for Faculty Excellence

The Liebelt/Wheeler Award was established through an endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Stanley W. Olson, Charter Provost, and is named for Robert A. Liebelt, M.D., Ph.D., Charter Dean, and E. Jay Wheeler, M.D., Ph.D., Charter Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

The Liebelt/Wheeler Award for Faculty Excellence honors a NEOMED faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary performance as a faculty member. Areas of evaluation include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching - current in content, capability to transmit information effectively, and personal interest in the students' learning;
  • Research and Scholarly Accomplishments - evidence of creativity and competence in research and utilization of this research for the students' benefit;
  • Professional Standing - Invited memberships in honorary societies; post-doctoral experiences; demonstration of exemplary patient care, clinical skills and mentoring; and
  • Service to NEOMED - administrative and committee service that promotes the educational and scholarly programs at NEOMED.

The Outstanding Faculty Research Award

The Outstanding Faculty Research Award honors a NEOMED faculty member who is an outstanding investigator. This award recognizes distinguished research and focuses on nationally and internationally recognized excellence and productivity in research. The individual recognized should have contributed substantively to his/her field of research interest.

Junior Faculty Recognition Award

The NEOMED University Council created this award to recognize junior faculty colleagues. The award honors a NEOMED faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary performance and has made a noteworthy contribution to the NEOMED community. To be eligible, the awardee must have a NEOMED faculty appointment for a minimum of two (2) years and be at the rank of instructor or assistant professor for fewer than seven (7) years from the date of his/her first appointment at NEOMED.

Areas of evaluation include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching - freshness of content, capability to transmit information effectively, and personal interest and engagement in the students' education and development;
  • Research and Scholarly Accomplishments - magnitude of contributions to his/her field of research interest;
  • Service - levels of service to NEOMED (e.g. contributions to institutional decision-making) and service outside of the institution (e.g. service to the community, service to the profession and/or scholarly service).

Nomination Process

NEOMED faculty, staff, students and colleagues may annually nominate qualified candidates; self-nominations are welcome. Nominations must include: (1) a letter of nomination that provides evidence of and establishes the candidate's qualifications for the award; (2) nominee's current curriculum vitae (to be provided by the nominator); and (3) any other substantiating information.

Selection

Separate award committees are convened annually for all faculty awards and are advisory to the President in the selection of the award recipients. Selection committees are comprised of faculty, junior and senior investigators, administrators, and/or the previous year's award recipients. Each committee is chaired by a senior-level faculty member or administrator.

Recognition

Award recipients receive: (1) recognition at the Spring University Update; (2) a cash award; and (3) an inscribed gift.
