College of Medicine Student Selected for NIH Research Program
Natasha Kesav, who just completed her third year in the College of Medicine, is one of 37 students selected nationally for the Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The research training program allows medical, dental, and veterinary students to take a break from their university studies to live on the intramural campus of NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, and conduct basic, clinical or translational research. The accepted scholars begin their fellowship in July/August 2018.
“The NIH Medical Research Scholars Program attracts the brightest talent from across the country. These scholars are the future leaders in American medicine,” said Thomas R. Burklow, M.D., director of the MRSP, in a press release announcing the 2018-19 cohort of student researchers. The students selected to participate receive mentored training to conduct research with fulltime NIH investigators.
Kesav said in an earlier interview in The Pulse that she hopes to engage in transformational biomedical research in order to impact the medical community from both the bench and the bedside. “The circle of mentorship at NEOMED is something that really fostered my interest in research and really helped my application for the MRSP program,’’ Kesav said.
The National Institutes of Health, the nation’s medical research agency, includes 27 Institutes and Centers and is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
