Dr. Crish joined the Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty in July, 2010. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio in 1996 and his Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois in 2004.

Research Interests

My research is concerned with pre-apoptotic changes occurring in glaucoma. Recently, as in other age-related neurodegenerative disorders, there have been a number of studies suggesting that functional deficits and compartmentalized degeneration occur well before cell death in glaucoma. It is unclear how much these pathologies produce the clinical symptoms characteristic to this disease or how they relate to eventual cell body loss.

I am most interested in exploring how defects in axonal transport, metabolism, and physiology 1) drive axonal and somatic degeneration, 2) correlate to loss of function, and 3) represent targets for interventions to improve outcome. This research will serve to better define glaucoma’s progression and allow the development of more effective treatments.

2011: Fight for Sight funded Dr. Crish’s grant titled “Testing Multifunctional Drugs in Glaucoma” for a Grant-in-Aid.

2007-2008: Postdoctoral Award for outstanding eye research projects, Fight For Sight. Grantees are selected through a rigorous review process by Fight for Sight's Scientific Review Committee.

Awards

A jointly authored Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) paper on recent findings in glaucoma research, of which Samuel D. Crish, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences at Northeast Ohio Medical University, was the lead author, has been awarded The Lewis Rudin Glaucoma Prize of The New York Academy of Medicine.

The Lewis Rudin Glaucoma Prize of the New York Academy recognizes the most significant scholarly article on glaucoma published in a peer-reviewed journal during the previous calendar year. Nominations for the prize are solicited from leaders of the ophthalmologic community and reviewed in the spring of the award year.
