Alexander Mdzinarishvili, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Dr. Mdzinarishvili joined the Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty of Northeast Ohio Medical University in July 2009.

He received his Bachelor Science in Biology and Master of Science in Physiology from Georgia State University, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia; his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Physiology from the Institute of Pharmacology, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Moscow, Russia.

In 2001, Dr. Mdzinarishvili accepted the position as post doctoral Research Associate in the Bowles center for Alcohol Studies, School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC. After successfully completing his tenure at UNC Chapel Hill, in 2003 he moved to Amarillo, TX to assume the position of post doctoral Research Associate before being promoted to Senior Research Associate, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Texas Tech University, School of Pharmacy, Health Sciences Center.

Research Interests

Primary focus of my group is brain stroke research (brain ischemia and edema).  Brain stroke is the third leading cause of death and the most frequent cause of disability in the US. With high death rates associated with brain stroke, neuroprotective treatment strategies are vital. Development of novel treatment strategies through the searching new pharmacological compounds (which could be used in the treatment and prevention of brain stroke) requires a thorough understanding of thecomplex neurochemical changes occurring in the brain microenvironment both during and after brain stroke. The development of new neuroprotective therapeutic strategies to minimize brain stroke-induced cell death and optimize cell self-repair in brain infarct areas, is crucial.

Primary research interest.

A second focus of my group is neurogenesis (neural stem cells – proliferation, migration and differentiation). Neurogenesis and neuronal self-repair mechanisms offer potential therapeutic avenues to pursue in attenuating the deleterious outcomes normally associated with brain stroke and stroke-associated brain edema. New compounds with neuroprotective properties, and novel drug delivery systems, such as nanoparticles may stimulate and enhance proliferation of neural stem cells under brain stroke conditions in select brain regions including the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) and the subventricular zone (SVZ). This ability of neuronal stem cells to integrate into various brain regions, and the modulation of this property by chemical intervention, may offer hope for the development of restorative therapies for ischemic, traumatic, and neurodegenerative brain

Secondary research focus.

diseases (Alzheimer, Parkinson, Multiple Sclerosis, etc). Further, inflammatory processes in the brain following ischemic stroke may present novel therapeutic targets to mitigate the loss of neurons
after insult.

In my laboratory, we utilize experimental models such as the murine MCAO brain stroke in vivo model (permanent and transient) as a useful paradigm of human brain infarct. In addition, other techniques, including an array of behavioral tests and analyses, osmotic pump implantation, various brain slice preparations used in association with appropriate staining methodologies, and immunohistochemistry are routinely used in our investigations.
