William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition

The William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition, sponsored by the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) College of Medicine, is open to medical students attending schools of medicine or osteopathy in the U.S. and Canada.

Each year hundreds of entries are submitted to the competition and go through a rigorous screening by English faculty at NEOMED's partner universities. The final judging is done by Richard Berlin, M.D., psychiatrist and poet from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

The first-, second- and third-place winners will be invited to read their poetry at an awards ceremony at NEOMED. In addition, the editors of the Journal of Medical Humanities review the winning poems and consider them for possible publication in that journal.

Entry Guidelines

The entry deadline for the competition is Dec. 31, 2013. Learn more about complete guidelines and rules for submissions.

Winning Poems

The top three poets will be awarded $300, $200 and $100 respectively. In addition, the three winners will be invited to visit NEOMED on April 4, 2014, to read their poems. All travel expenses will be paid by the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Winning poems will be announced by March 31, 2014.
